Ranger News!

Dear Parents and Guardians,

We welcome you and your student to another exciting year of learning at Rio Vista Elementary School.  We continue to strive to provide the best education for each student.

We accomplished many things during the 2013-2014 school year.  Rio Vista was recognized as one of only 14 schools in Riverside County as a California Distinguished School.  We also were one of only 30 schools in California to receive the Physical Activity and Nutrition Program award.  Our Title I Academic Achievement award was only given to seven schools in Riverside County.  We were once again named a California Business for Education Excellence School.  Finally, significant growth in the number of students achieving English Proficiency on the CELDT test was once again evident.  These achievements are a reflection of the hard work and commitment demonstrated by all students, staff, and families.  I am very proud of the dedication I observe from everyone every day.

This year there will be a strong focus on the Common Core standards.  There will be several noticeable changes with the implementation of the Common Core standards.  Students will be required to explain their thinking and strategy used when solving problems.  An increased use of writing to support text will be evident.  There will be a focus on explicit academic language and vocabulary, along with the use of more complex text.

An increased use of technology will be needed to achieve proficiency with the Common Core standards.  Our 3rd-5th grades students will take the SBAC, a computer-based test in Reading and Math in the spring.  This is an opportunity for students to demonstrate what they know and how they have progressed with the Common Core standards.

We are all very excited about the new playground equipment which was installed during the spring on both the main playground and Kindergarten playground.  Our playground was resurfaced over the summer.  Many more four square and hop scotch games are now available for our students.

There will be new dismissal procedures on Avenida Quintana for the 2014-2015 school year.  In an effort to make our dismissal procedures more efficient and safer for our students, barriers have been installed at the Avenida Quintana exit of our parking lot, which will make it a right-turn only from this exit.  Barriers are also installed at the Verona Road exit which also requires a right-turn only.  Our goal is to allow traffic to move at a quicker pace and reduce the line of traffic on Verona Road as parents wait to pick up students at the end of the day.  By making right-turn only exits, the wait time to exit our parking lot should be reduced.  Also, the amount of traffic on Verona Road should decrease due to these changes.  This is important because the majority of our students who walk access Verona Road.
As always, attendance is very important in the success of your child.  Incentives for students will be provided throughout the year.  For students who are at school every day with no tardies and no early dismissals, a “Star Attendance” t-shirt will be awarded, along with a chance to win a bicycle.

Our uniform policy continues this year.  Please remember to purchase white or blue shirts along with navy blue or khaki pants, shorts, or skirts for your child.  We are selling new school shirts for only $7.00 each.  All of these items will be part of our uniform policy for the 2014-2015 school year.

I am looking forward to another exciting school year and seeing everyone at our Back to School Nights.  My door is always open for questions or concerns.  You may contact me at any time at 416-0032.  Please continue working hard for your student.

Sincerely,
Mike Long
