Ranger News!

The cooler weather is finally here, and our students and staff are working very hard.  As I walk from classroom to classroom, it is apparent that quality instruction is taking place, and our students are learning.  We have seen academic growth in all areas, such as Language Arts and Math, since the start of the year.

Starting in the 2014-2015 school year, Rio Vista will move to a new calendar.  Our school year will begin on August 18th.  There will be a three week Winter Recess and a two week Spring Recess.  The last day of school will be June 11, 2015.

The E-Track schools in Palm Springs Unified School District will continue for one more year on their current schedule and transition to the new calendar during the 2015-2016 school year.  This will allow all schools in the District to be on a single calendar.

Also, we are in a transition from the Standardized Testing and Reporting (STAR) assessments we have given in the Spring to the new Smarter Balanced assessments.  The new assessments will be computer-based, which allows for a much broader range of test questions than the multiple-choice exams given under STAR.

For the 2013-2014 school year, we will administer field tests of the Smarter Balanced assessments in 3rd-5th grades.  The only STAR assessments that will be administered will be 5th grade Science and CAPA for those students meeting CAPA criteria.

Finally, I am pleased to announce that because of the results of our 2013 STAR assessments, we are eligible to apply to become a California Distinguished School for 2014.  This program focuses on a school’s long-term success by providing recognition and motivation to attain high academic achievement and educational excellence for all students.  We will be completing the application process and will know if we are selected as a California Distinguished School by the Spring.

Let’s keep working hard for our students!
