Course Scope

The purpose of this class is the development of student leadership skills through class work and practical experience, including school and community service. Enrollment in this class is required for, and limited to all members of the James Workman Middle School Associated Student Body Cabinet and Congress.

 

Course Goals and Objectives

During the course of this year students will have the opportunity to:

1. Improve speaking skills in small or large groups.

2. Improve listening skills in small or large groups.

3. Improve group skills necessary to get others to listen.

4. Increase poise while working in groups.

5. Increase awareness of the importance of public relations.

6. Increase their awareness and effectivness in group process and skills as they apply to there various situations.

7. Increase their understanding of different leadership styles as they apply to various situations.

8. Increase their understanding of the concepts of conflict resolution.

9. Increase their ability to apply effective motivation and involvment techniques.

10. Increase their understanding of appropriate group decision making process.

11. Increase their understanding of effective goal setting.

12. Increase their understanding of the concept of group dynamics.

13. Increase their self esteem and self concept through increased understanding and awareness of self.

14. Increase understanding of self through self-inventory, value clarification, goal setting, and evaluating experiences.

15. Increase their skills in areas of assertiveness, risk-taking, conflict resolution, and time management.

16. Increase their self-help skills in areas of stress management, coping with failure/success, and dealing with criticism/praise.

17. Increase their understanding of the values of positive reinforcement, trust, and honest communication.

18. Increase their awareness of social, cultural, ethnic and racial diversity, and to increase there ability to deal with such diversity.

19. Increase their understanding of techniques used to develop positive school and community climates.

20. Increase their understanding of the lonely/alienated students and ways to increase their sense of belonging.

21. Develop an appreciation of their community through participation in service projects.

22. Foster their knowledge of the parliamentary procedures.
