Mr. Ellington
Counseling Center
Thank you for your interest in Desert Springs Middle School’s
unique student assistance program. My name is Steve Ellington and I am a Certified
Alcohol and Drug Counselor and trained group facilitator with over 18 years
experience in the behavioral health care field. As a full time “Prevention Specialist ”, I staff the district’s only on-site middle school counseling
center, seven hours a day, five days a week
In the DSMS Counseling Center, pupils are seen individually and in small groups
to discuss a variety of issues that could become barriers to their education.
The students are directed to the Counseling Center by parents, teachers, support
staff and administrators. Self-referrals are numerous as well. A variety of
self defeating behaviors, stress and anger management, grief issues, drug abuse,
chemical dependency in the family, conflict resolution, as well as academic
interventions and career options are but a few of the topics discussed. The
goal of Title 1 is always the ultimate objective: Helping disadvantaged children
meet high standards.
The Desert Springs Middle School Counseling Center’s Mission is to provide
at- risk youth with a secure, positive environment where they can gain hope
and belief, earn trust and self-respect and learn skills to lead a productive
lifestyle free of gangs, drugs and poverty.
